Food Grade Xylitol

Feb 05, 2026

Food Grade Xylitol (INS 967, CNS 19.007, CAS 87-99-0) is a naturally occurring five-carbon sugar alcohol, widely recognized as a high-quality, low-calorie sugar substitute compliant with global food safety standards, such as China’s GB 1886.234-2016, the US FDA GRAS, and EU food additive regulations.

1. Source & Production

  • Natural occurrence: Found in small amounts in strawberries, blueberries, birch trees, corn cobs, etc.
  • Industrial process: Made from plant fiber raw materials (corn cobs, bagasse, birch wood) via hydrolysis to xylose, followed by catalytic hydrogenation, purification, and crystallization, yielding a white crystalline powder with a purity ≥99%.

2. Key Properties

  • Sweetness & Calories: Sweetness is ~1.0x that of sucrose; only 2.4 kcal/g (vs 4 kcal/g for sucrose). Low glycemic index (GI≈7–10), metabolized without insulin, friendly to diabetics and weight-managers.
  • Dental Health: Not fermented by oral cariogenic bacteria (e.g., Streptococcus mutans), does not produce acid to erode enamel, and can inhibit bacterial growth—recognized by dental associations worldwide.
  • Cool Taste & Stability: Endothermic dissolution gives a fresh, cool mouthfeel; heat/acid resistant, no Maillard browning (good for maintaining product color in baking); moderate hygroscopicity helps retain moisture in pastries.
  • Limitations: Excessive intake (over 30–50g/day for adults) may cause osmotic diarrhea/flatulence; toxic to dogs and ferrets (even small amounts are dangerous).

3. Main Applications

  • Confectionery: Sugar-free chewing gum, hard candies, chocolates (the largest application area).
  • Beverages: Sugar-free drinks, yogurt, plant-based milks, adding a cool taste.
  • Baked goods: Cakes, cookies, breads (extends softness, no browning).
  • Oral care: Toothpaste, mouthwash as a non-cariogenic sweetener.
  • Dietary supplements & functional foods: Diabetic-friendly formulas, weight-control products.

4. Quality Standards & Packaging

  • Food-grade standard: Purity ≥99%, strict limits on heavy metals, microorganisms, arsenic, lead, etc.
  • Common packaging: 25kg paper bags with inner food-grade PE liners; small retail packs (100g, 500g) for household use.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from moisture and odorous substances.

5. Compliance & Trade Tips

  • Global regulatory approval: Listed as a permitted food additive in China, the US, EU, Japan, etc.
  • Labeling requirements: Must mark "sugar alcohol may have a laxative effect if overconsumed"; clearly indicate "not for pets (toxic to dogs)".
  • Supply chain: The main production regions are China, Finland, and the US, with corn cobs as the primary raw material in China, and birch wood in Nordic countries.Food Additives Grade Food Industry Xylitol
